Welcome to the English Department
The English Department is based in Block A, and consists of 8 members of staff. The Department offers a wide range of units, some based around prose, poetry and drama, and others based on media and non-fiction texts.
In Years 7-9 a range of topics and texts are covered, and the department are regularly looking to introduce new and exciting texts to students. At GCSE in Years 10 and 11 a range of texts is studied. These include Of Mice & Men by John Steinbeck, An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley, and Romeo & Juliet. We also offer courses in English Literature and English Language at Key Stage 5.
We hope to showcase some of the best student work on these pages in the months ahead, but for now, here are some reading recommendations from some of the teachers in the department.
Mrs Reeves – Wintersmith, part of Discworld series , by Terry Pratchett
Mr Hartley – For those who have finished Harry Potter and want an even better read, try Mortal Engines by Philip Reeves, or Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. Both are the opening books of series, and are magnificent for both teenagers and grown-ups who like a well-told tale! UPDATE - The Knife of Never Letting Go by Philip Ness won this year's Guardian prize for Young people's Fiction. It is outstanding and currently being passed around my Year 11 students.
Mr Chilton – The Bell, by Iris Murdoch
